Aikido is a relatively young martial art that was created around the middle of the 20th Century in Japan by O-Sensei Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969). After decades intensively studying various martial arts that included the use of traditional weapons as well as empty-handed techniques, Ueshiba longed for further completion of the martial arts.

Through deep spiritual  practice and experience he came to the conclusion that a true victory for all parties in a conflict is only achievable if each stays physically and mentally unharmed throughout the conflict. Based on this fundamental and – at the same time – universally simple wisdom Ueshiba derived up until then unknown principles of fighting and daily life. As the result of that process Aikido was born to preserve or to recall the state of harmonious balance.

Aikido can put us into the position to defend ourselves without harming our partners/opponents. Freed from the need of defeat two parties become one and solve their conflict together instead of destroying each other. With the help of Aikido conflicts can be identified at an early stage and thus escalation can be prevented.

With a minimal amount of force in Aikido the energy of an attack is being either neutralised, absorbed, diverted or directed against the attacker who should then realise that the actual attack makes no sense and therefore should cease. The attacker becomes a partner in a process of joint learning. So consequently Aikido is not about destruction or knocking out.

This inherently peaceful art applies highly efficient techniques and principles to develop physical abilities and skills. At the same time Aikido influences the Aikidokas’ personalities based upon universal harmony.
